Mutually Exclusive and Independent Events

Mutually Exclusive Events-

Two or more events events are said to be mutually exclusive if only one can happen at a time.

Example-1

In tossing a coin, event of tail up (T) and even of heads up (H) can not happen simultaneously. They are mutually exclusive events.

Example-2

In rolling of a dice, event of  face 4  up and event of  face 6 up can not happen simultaneously .

Independent Events

Two or more than two events are said to be independent if they can happen simultaneously. And ocurrence of one event does  affect on another.

Example-1

If two coins are tossed simultaneously, occurring of head (H)  up on one coin does not affect on ocurrence of tail up on another coin.

Example-

If two dice are rolled simultaneously, occuring of 4 face up  on first dice does not affect the ocurrenceof  6 face up on second dice.
