Probability Terminologies

Terminologies Related to Probability Theory

1-Random Experiment-

If an experiment is conducted then the outcome will not be unique but it may  be   from possible list of outcomes.
Example- If you are tossing two coins the possible outcomes would be {TT, TH, HT,HH}.

2- Events-

Outcome of a random experiment is called events, if you are tossing two coins then outcome would be {TT, TH, HT,HH}. an events would be

TH——–> Getting a head or tail

HH——–> Getting two heads

TT———> Getting zero head

3- Exhaustive Events-

If you conduct a random experiment, then total number of possible outcomes are called exhaustive events.

In experiment of tossing two coins, all possible outcomes are {TT, TH, HT,HH}, then  number of exhaustive events is denoted by n(E) and the value would be 4.

i. e.  n(E)=4

4- Favorable Events-

If you are conducting a random experiment of tossing two coins and favorable case is getting two heads then from list of possible outcomes favorable event is HH, and number of favorable  events is denoted by n(s) and is 1.

i. e.  n(s)=1

5- Equally Likely Events-

Suppose you are tossing a coin then head and tail have equal chance to come. So, both events are equally likely events.

That means that possibility of coming head and tail is equal.

6- Mutually Exclusive Events-

In a random experiment, events are said to be mutually exclusive if happening of one event ruled out possibility of happening of other events.

Example-1-     If a coin is tossed, then either head or tail will come, if head comes possibility of coming tail is ruled out.

Example-2- If you are throwing a dice and 2 comes then possibility of coming 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 is ruled out.

7- Independent Events-

Events are said to be independent events if occurrence of one event does not affect occurrence of other events.

Example- If you are tossing two coins then occurrence of head on the first coin does not affect occurrence of head or tail on second coin.
